Monthly Archives: March 2013
The year began as usual with the Munch & Punch chez Jethwa where Carole’s punch warmed away those mid-January blues; a good and garrulous time was had by all. In March we had the quiz with fish & chips at Mathern, which was well supported (and won) by members’ friends who joined our usual crowd. July saw the Summer Stir-Fry Barbecue at St Arvans; once again it was warmer sitting and eating inside but at least we were able to cook outside.
Then, the highlight of the year, the visit of our friends from Cormeilles in August. Summer sunshine this year being virtually non-existent, we were lucky it stayed more or less dry for our reception in the grand surroundings of Chepstow Castle, where the mayor, Paul Rutter, impressed everyone with his welcoming speech in French. We were also lucky with Saturday’s trip to Tredegar House, which provided an interesting morning for all. After a picnic lunch we headed to Cardiff where some visited the museum and others ventured towards the shops and the stadium. Sunday evening saw the ceilidh with Rig a Jig and fish & chips at the Drill Hall, where Nataley sang delightfully for us in the interval. On Monday the weather turned totally against us for the Family Fun Day; we enjoyed our Ploughman’s Lunch at Mathern but the outdoor games had to be rapidly replaced by indoor ones. Thanks to the ingenuity of Ash, a good time was still had by all!
Our AGM was held in November; Dave stood down from the committee after years of sterling service and his place as token male was taken by Martin Brady. We also welcomed Tracey Kinsey to our numbers. Our final event of 2012 was the Christmas Dinner at The George in Tintern, where we enjoyed good food, company and entertainment to round off the year.
